A simple and perfectly legal way to avoid any Federal income tax on investments is to choose bonds. Superficially, the idea of owning tax-exempt bonds naturally sounds fine, and the higher a man’s income-tax bracket, the more important it sounds. Some mutual-fund sponsors have been attempting to obtain tax exemption for an individual on dividends received from a mutual fund whose portfolio is invested entirely in tax-exempt bonds.

The Protective Services Of United States Savings Bonds
United States Savings Bonds were first offered in March, 1935, and later were designed as an investment for excess savings during World War II. They are not really bonds, in a technical sense, since they are not a lien upon the properties of the government; more properly they should be classed as debentures, since their security depends entirely upon the credit and stability of the government of the United States.

Survivor benefits in its pure form is a simple idea. Pure survivor benefits is actually death insurance. A life-insurance policy is a contract between an insured person and an insurance company. From the standpoint of investing, survivor benefits is a substitute for lack of capital.
